Public transport links the capital well with Madrid but the villages poorly with each other, and from the north-east or the Tierra de Pinares getting to the hospital or catching an early train is hard without a car.
Busiest times of year
- Long weekends and trips from Madrid (weekends, long weekends and Easter): Segovia and La Granja are among the most common day trips from Madrid. On long weekends and at Easter the old town and the area around the aqueduct fill up, and return pickups in the late afternoon all coincide.
- San Juan and San Pedro fiestas (late June): Segovia city's patron-saint fiestas, spanning San Juan and San Pedro, bring concerts and street events over several days. There are traffic closures in the centre and many people returning to the villages at night.
- Winter in the mountains (December to March): With snow, the Navacerrada pass and the Alto del León may require chains or close, and the AP-6 tunnels are usually the safest way through to Madrid. Trips to Barajas and Guiomar are best planned with extra margin.
- Summer and the Cuéllar bull runs (July to late August): In summer the mountain homes and the north-eastern villages fill up, and at the end of August Cuéllar holds its bull runs, which draw many outsiders. These are weeks of many weekend arrivals and departures, and of late-night returns.
Tip: From Riaza, Sepúlveda or Cantalejo, the A-1 is usually a more direct way to the airport than going down to Segovia; say so when booking if you have a preference.
