Palazuelos de Eresma and San Cristóbal de Segovia: the city's commuter belt to Guiomar, the hospital, Barajas and Valladolid airport
Palazuelos de Eresma and San Cristóbal de Segovia are the city's commuter belt: a step from Segovia, but spread across settlements and housing estates where the bus calls rarely. For Guiomar, the transfer from Palazuelos covers 10 km in about 12 min; for Barajas, from San Cristóbal, it is published from 153,30 € per car via the AP-61 and the AP-6. Valladolid-Villanubla airport has no published route from these villages: its page calculates the price from the exact address, and it only pays off when the flight leaves from there. The price is fixed before booking.

Why are Palazuelos and San Cristóbal not «Segovia» when you book a car?
Because they are municipalities in their own right, with several settlements separated by fields, river and housing estates. Palazuelos de Eresma stretches along the Eresma between the city and the foot of the mountains, on the way to La Granja, and takes in the village of Palazuelos, Tabanera del Monte, which has almost merged with it, the Parque Robledo and Peñas del Erizo estates, Quitapesares and Carrascalejo. San Cristóbal de Segovia, north-east of the city and very close to it, split from Palazuelos and became a municipality by a decree of the Junta de Castilla y León in 1999, and today also includes Montecorredores and El Terradillo. For a driver arriving from elsewhere, «Palazuelos» can be several kilometres from a house in Parque Robledo, and a doorway in San Cristóbal is not found the way one in the old town is, so the booking needs the street, the number and, on the estates, a landmark.
The province page places them in the area of Segovia and its surroundings, with the city at the centre of almost everything: the hospital, the high-speed station, public offices and a good share of the jobs. Many residents moved here from the city or from Madrid and keep the rhythm of a commuter town: they leave early, come back in the afternoon and do by car what in central Segovia they would do on foot. Public transport exists, with bus stops in the main settlements that link to the city, but with the timetables of small villages, and it does not match the first train or the end of a hospital appointment. That is why the trips most often requested from the commuter belt are not long ones: Guiomar station, the General Hospital, the aqueduct as a meeting point, and now and then Barajas or a Madrid station.
How do you reach Guiomar station from the commuter belt, and when is the AVE worth it?
Guiomar is south-east of the city, on the outskirts, and from the commuter belt there is no need to enter the old town: the SG-20 ring road circles the city and leads to the station without passing the aqueduct. From Palazuelos de Eresma it is 10 km on the ring road, and from San Cristóbal de Segovia the transfer is published from 18,92 € per car. It is a short trip, but it is exactly the one that breaks down without a car of your own: the village bus goes to central Segovia, and from there the city line to Guiomar meets the main trains, not all of them, so an early train can mean two changes or a taxi ordered the night before. Leaving your own car in the station car park is another option, reasonable for a day return, less so for several days or when someone at home needs it.
The AVE pays off when the destination is in Madrid and well connected to Chamartín, or when you continue by train northwards, because Guiomar is on the Madrid–Valladolid high-speed line and from there you connect with trains to Valladolid and beyond. It stops paying with large suitcases and with Barajas as the final destination, because the connection from Chamartín with luggage eats up much of the advantage. Timetables are published by Renfe and change by season, so you check the day's timetable before deciding. For anyone returning at night, the transfer from Guiomar home is booked with the train number: the driver waits at the station exit with a name sign and follows the train, so a delay moves the pickup and leaves nobody on an open site on the outskirts with no bus to Tabanera or Montecorredores.
And for an appointment at Segovia General Hospital?
Segovia General Hospital, on the south-west side of the city, is the reference hospital for the whole province, and from the commuter belt it is reached by circling the city on the SG-20 rather than crossing the centre. From Palazuelos de Eresma it is 8 km, and from San Cristóbal de Segovia the transfer is published from 18,00 €. These are short trips, but the difficulty is not the distance: it is the appointment time, which does not match the bus, the length of a test, which nobody knows in advance, and the return of someone who comes out tired or with blurred vision after having their pupils dilated. A car with a driver covers the outward and return trips without a relative having to take the morning off, and the pickup is requested for when the appointment ends, at whichever entrance is agreed.
It helps to be clear about what it is and what it is not. It is a car with a driver to and from the appointment, with the passenger seated and no medical assistance; it does not replace an ambulance or the patient transport that Sacyl provides when there is a medical indication. For older people living alone on an estate, the transfer can be booked by a son or daughter in another city, in the traveller's name, with their phone number and the address of the house, and the confirmation sent to them. If a wheelchair-accessible vehicle is needed, you say so when booking, and the accessibility page explains what can be requested. For some specialities the hospital refers patients to Madrid or Valladolid, and then the trip changes scale: transfers to Madrid hospitals have their own page, and the price is fixed the same way, before booking and per car.
Does Valladolid-Villanubla airport make sense from Segovia's commuter belt?
Sometimes it does, and it is worth knowing when. Valladolid airport is at Villanubla, north-west of Valladolid, beside the León road, and from Segovia it is reached by going up the A-601 through Cuéllar and skirting Valladolid to the airport turn-off. There is no published route from Palazuelos or San Cristóbal to Villanubla, so there is no «from» fare to quote: the Valladolid airport page calculates the price from the exact address and the flight time, like any other booking. For scale, the engine publishes Segovia to Valladolid at 116 km and about 87 min, and the airport lies a little beyond the city. It is a flat road with no mountain passes, which in winter avoids the Guadarrama range, but it is not shorter than going to Barajas from the commuter belt, and that is almost always what decides it.
What tips the balance is the flight, not the road. Villanubla has a short list of flights, with connections to the Canary Islands and the odd seasonal route, and the current schedule is published by Aena; Barajas has almost every destination and most departure times. Going to Valladolid pays off when the flight you need leaves from there at a reasonable hour, when you prefer a small terminal with the car at the door and short security queues, or when the return lands at night and the mountains have snow. It does not pay to plan the trip around Villanubla if the destination requires a connection: a direct flight from Barajas usually saves more time than the longer drive costs. In both cases the transfer leaves from home, the driver follows the flight on the way back and waits in arrivals with a name sign, and the price is fixed before booking.
How do you get to Barajas and Madrid's stations from Palazuelos and San Cristóbal?
Just as from the city, but without going into it. The car takes the SG-20 and the AP-61 to San Rafael, crosses the Guadarrama tunnel on the AP-6 and descends on the A-6 to the M-40 or the M-50, which lead to Barajas without passing through central Madrid. From Palazuelos de Eresma it is 112 km to the terminal, with tolls included in the fixed price. From Palazuelos there is also a road over the Navacerrada pass, by way of La Granja, shorter on the map but a mountain road; the driver chooses according to the state of the passes published by the DGT and, in winter, the tunnel is the safe way through. The terminal is given when booking, because at Barajas T1 or T2 is not the same as T4, and the airport pickup page describes the meeting point at each one.
Madrid's stations are requested to connect with trains to the south and east that do not pass through Segovia, and by people who prefer a train from Madrid at a time Guiomar does not offer. Chamartín is in the north of the city, on the side you enter from the mountains, and from San Cristóbal de Segovia it is published from 129,22 € per car; Atocha means crossing Madrid and is best booked with a margin at rush hour. IFEMA also has its own page from both villages, useful for trade fairs, because the venue is next to Barajas and shares its access from the M-40. For several people travelling together, the price is per car rather than per passenger, which changes the comparison with the coach or with the AVE plus the metro; for someone travelling alone and light, the train from Guiomar remains the cheapest option to Madrid.
What changes with visitors, families and winter in the commuter belt?
The commuter belt receives visitors. People living in Parque Robledo or Montecorredores often have family or friends arriving by AVE at Guiomar or by plane at Barajas, and the transfer is booked in their name, with the train or flight number, so that the driver waits for them with a name sign and drops them at the front door. From Palazuelos, the Royal Palace of La Granja is a step away, with its own page from the village, and Pedraza, the walled town in the north-east, is the afternoon outing with no bus back, especially during the candlelight concerts in July. For families with small children or a lot of luggage, you state when booking how many are travelling and with which cases, so that the vehicle is the right one, and groups that do not fit in one car request two or a larger vehicle.
Winter makes itself felt even though the commuter belt is not mountain country. Mornings from December to March bring fog and ice on the roads of the Eresma valley and on the climb to San Rafael, and transfers for early flights or trains are booked with extra margin. In late June, the city's San Juan and San Pedro fiestas close streets in the centre for several days and fill the late-night returns to the villages; from the commuter belt, the pickup is set outside the old town, for example by the aqueduct, where a car can stop. On long weekends and at Easter, the AP-6 towards Madrid fills up on Sunday afternoon and the departure time for Barajas is worked out with that traffic in mind. Cancellation and waiting terms are on the help page, and an invoice is available for anyone travelling on business with a company account.
Frequently asked questions
How much is it from Palazuelos de Eresma to Guiomar station?
The published «from» fare is 20,29 € per car, for a trip that skirts the city on the SG-20 without entering the old town. The calculator gives the exact price with your address, whether in Palazuelos, Tabanera del Monte or Parque Robledo, and with the date and time of the train.
Why is there no published price from San Cristóbal to Valladolid airport?
Because that route is not among those published from the province. The Valladolid-Villanubla airport page calculates the price from your address and the flight time, and fixes it before booking, like any other trip.
Which is better for flying from the commuter belt: Barajas or Villanubla?
It depends on the flight. Barajas has almost every destination and time; Villanubla has few, with connections to the Canary Islands and the odd seasonal route. Find the flight first and choose the airport afterwards; the road distance does not decide it on its own.
Can you take my mother from Montecorredores to an appointment at the General Hospital?
Yes. It is booked in her name with the address and her phone number, and the return is requested for when the appointment ends, at whichever hospital entrance is agreed. It is a car with a driver, not patient transport.
Do you go through central Segovia to get to Barajas?
There is no need: from Palazuelos and San Cristóbal the car skirts the city on the SG-20 and takes the AP-61 and the AP-6, with tolls included. If you prefer to avoid the toll or go over Navacerrada, say so when booking.
