Driving a private hire car in Segovia: Guiomar outside the city, the AP-6 tunnel, Barajas beyond Madrid and the weekend getaways; the method and the variables for working out whether it pays
Segovia is a province of connections: Segovia-Guiomar station is outside the city and from La Granja, Cuéllar, Riaza or Sepúlveda it is reached by car; Barajas lies on the far side of the mountains and of Madrid, via the AP-61, the AP-6 tunnel and the M-40, with no direct public transport; and at weekends the city and La Granja take in the Madrid getaways, with night-time returns. Add the General Hospital and the referrals to Valladolid and Madrid. From Segovia to Barajas it is 108 km and about 86 min. Whether it pays is worked out from the car's fixed costs, the empty kilometres of each corridor and the hours you can cover; the drivers page publishes the commission and the simulator for doing that sum with your own numbers.

What makes Segovia different for a driver?
Almost everything that moves goes through a connection. The Segovia-Guiomar high-speed station is on the outskirts, on the Madrid–Valladolid line, several kilometres from the aqueduct and with no conventional train linking it to the villages; the city bus meets some trains and nothing leaves La Granja, Cuéllar or the north-east in time for the first Avant. There is no airport in the province: Barajas lies beyond the mountains and beyond Madrid, and Valladolid airport, with few routes, is the alternative for the Tierra de Pinares. The General Hospital is south-west of the capital and serves the whole province, with referrals to Valladolid and Madrid. And the city, La Granja and Pedraza take in the Madrid getaways every weekend, arriving by AVE and by car and all returning at the same time.
The geography sets three distinct corridors. The capital, La Granja and El Espinar look to Madrid via the AP-61 and the AP-6 tunnel, with the toll included in the price and the Alto del León and the Navacerrada pass as alternatives that snow closes in winter. The Tierra de Pinares, Cuéllar, Carbonero and Nava de la Asunción, runs down to Segovia on the A-601 and looks to Valladolid for the referral hospital and the airport. And the north-east, Riaza, Sepúlveda and Cantalejo, goes out to Madrid and Barajas on the A-1 over Somosierra without passing through Segovia, as the province page advises. The route pages publish trips from eleven origins in the province to Guiomar, Barajas, Madrid's stations, IFEMA, the hospital, the aqueduct, the Alcázar, the La Granja palace, Coca castle and Pedraza.
Which corridors have demand in the province and what figures do the route pages publish?
The figures are those of the route engine, the ones the customer sees before booking and on which the published commission is calculated. The Guiomar connections are short and repeated: from La Granja de San Ildefonso, 13 km, from 25,36 €, with a train time on the way out and a train number on the way back. The airports are long and take half a day: El Espinar to Barajas is the shortest in the province for being at the mouth of the tunnel; Cuéllar to Barajas, 171 km and about 128 min, from 218,68 €; Riaza to Barajas on the A-1 over Somosierra, without passing through Segovia, 108 km. The hospital is the morning trip with waiting: Cuéllar to the General Hospital, 61 km.
The seasons set the calendar. Long weekends, Easter and ordinary weekends bring the Madrid getaways: pickups at Guiomar with a name sign, runs down to the aqueduct, the hop to La Granja and late-afternoon returns that all coincide, and in July the candlelight concerts at Pedraza, with no public transport back. In late June, San Juan and San Pedro close the capital's centre and send many people back to the villages at night; in August, the Cuéllar bull runs fill the Tierra de Pinares with arrivals and small-hours departures. In winter the mountains shrink the margin: with snow, Navacerrada and the Alto del León close and the AP-6 tunnel is the only way through, so early-morning airport runs are accepted with the route confirmed the day before. Nobody promises how many jobs there will be in a January week in Riaza: there is a price known before setting off and a sum each driver does with their own figures.
How do you work out whether it pays: fixed costs, empty kilometres and hours covered?
The method is the same in any province; the variables are Segovia's. First, the car's fixed costs, which run even when it does not move: the finance payment or depreciation, insurance covering passengers, the roadworthiness test, road tax, the authorisation and the self-employed contribution. Second, the costs per kilometre: fuel, tyres, maintenance and tolls, which weigh in Segovia because the AP-61 and AP-6 are paid on almost every trip to Madrid. Third, the empty kilometres of each corridor: a Barajas run from Cuéllar is a long outward trip and, with no return booked, an equally long trip back with no customer; a Guiomar connection from La Granja has almost no empty running if the driver lives nearby. And fourth, the hours you can cover: the hospital and train mornings, the getaway afternoons, the airport small hours.
With those four variables, the sum is simple to set up and different for everyone: what each kilometre costs, how many of each corridor's kilometres carry a customer and how many hours a week you want to put in. A driver from El Espinar who takes mainly airports and Madrid stations will have little empty running and many tolls; one from Cuéllar who combines the hospital in the morning, Guiomar at midday and Coca or Valladolid in the afternoon will have more kilometres and less motorway; one from Riaza will live off weekends and the A-1. The drivers page publishes the current commission and a simulator into which you enter your own costs, the corridors you plan to cover and the hours available, and it returns the sum with the driver's numbers, not with promises: this guide gives no earnings or job figures because they depend on each car, each area and each week.
How does a job reach your phone, what is bidding for an uncovered job, and what are the rules?
The customer books on the website or in the app with pickup, destination, date and time and sees a fixed price before confirming; the job appears in the driver app with all the details and the amount, and you accept or decline. Once accepted, the app navigates to the pickup, tracks the trip states and generates the trip sheet before departure. There is also an option for the partner driver: when a job in your area is left uncovered, you can bid for it by proposing your price, and the customer decides; it is a possibility, not an assured source of jobs, and nobody promises how many will go uncovered in Sepúlveda on a Tuesday. At Guiomar and at Barajas the pickup is always a customer with a booking, with their train or flight on the job, and the app follows delays; you cannot wait at the taxi rank or offer the car to people getting off the train.
In Segovia's old town the car does not go where it likes: the council regulates access to the walled town and closes it on long weekends, at Easter and San Juan, so the job carries the pickup point the day's arrangements allow, usually by the aqueduct or at the Alcázar end, and the driver confirms it with the customer from the app. Late cancellations and waiting are settled under the policy published on the help page, which is the same one the customer sees; the invoice is issued by the platform in the name of the customer or their company, and whatever is collected in cash on board is deducted in the settlement. In the mountains, small-hours jobs in winter are proposed with a margin and the driver confirms the day before; if a pass closes, the customer is told through the app rather than the pickup being missed.
Which legal framework applies: Royal Decree-Law 13/2018, Castilla y León and the jobs that end in Madrid?
You need a valid driving licence and, with your own vehicle, the VTC authorisation in the holder's name, insurance covering passengers, the roadworthiness test and the registration document; everything is checked before the first job and the platform warns of expiry dates. The state framework is the Land Transport Act as left by Royal Decree-Law 13/2018: the VTC authorisation entitles you to interurban services, and urban ones depend on what each autonomous community regulates, which may set additional conditions. In Castilla y León that competence is exercised by the Junta, and what is published at jcyl.es is the reference worth reading before starting; the knowledge-centre piece on regulation by autonomous community summarises what changes from one territory to another. The trip sheet and the filing with the Ministry's register before every job are compulsory and the platform generates them.
The question most repeated in Segovia is the Madrid one: jobs ending at Barajas, at Chamartín or in the centre are legal under a Castilla y León authorisation because the origin is in the province, and the same goes for the return booked from Madrid to Segovia as part of the same job or with the customer coming home. What does not fit is stationing the car to pick up jobs originating in the Madrid region beyond the share of services in the home region that the Land Transport Regulations require, or waiting at the Barajas taxi rank for someone without a booking. The application is sent from the drivers page or from the app, stating the area — the capital, the mountains, the Tierra de Pinares or the north-east — and whether you bring a vehicle; the commission, the settlement and the simulator are published there, not here.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Segovia to Barajas, the province's typical airport run?
108 km on the AP-61, through the AP-6 tunnel and the M-40, from 148,77 € according to the route engine; it is the price the customer sees, toll included, and on which the published commission is calculated.
Can you pick someone up at Guiomar or Barajas without a booking?
No. A VTC only performs pre-booked services; at the station and the airport the pickup is a customer with a booking and their train or flight on the job. Waiting at the taxi rank or soliciting on the platform is prohibited.
What is bidding for an uncovered job?
When a job in your area is left without a driver, the platform lets the partner driver propose a price and the customer decides whether to accept it. It is one more option, not a guarantee of jobs: how many go uncovered depends on the area and the week.
How much does a VTC driver earn in Segovia?
This guide does not give that figure because it depends on the car, the corridors you cover, the empty kilometres and the hours: the simulator on the drivers page works it out with your own costs and the published commission. What is fixed is that the price of each job is known before you accept it.
Can I take a customer from El Espinar to Chamartín with a Castilla y León authorisation?
Yes: the origin is in the province, so it is a legal interurban service under a Castilla y León authorisation; the route page publishes it from 96,39 €. What you cannot do is seek customers originating in Madrid beyond what the ROTT allows.

How we write, where the figures come from and how we correct an error: editorial policy.
The published commission, the simulator, waiting time and cancellation policy are those of the drivers page and the help page on the date consulted; the regulations cited are those in force on that date and whatever Castilla y León regulates must be checked at jcyl.es. None of this promises a volume of jobs or earnings: each driver does the sum with their own figures. Distances and times are those of the route engine in daytime with no incidents.
