Within the province almost everything converges on the city of Segovia: the hospital, Guiomar station and public offices. Public transport links the capital well with Madrid but the villages poorly with each other, and from the north-east or the Tierra de Pinares getting to the hospital or catching an early train is hard without a car.

The Alcázar stands at the western tip of the old town, above the meeting of the Eresma and Clamores rivers, at the opposite end of the city from the aqueduct. Many visitors walk there from the aqueduct, so it helps to fix the pickup at one end or the other.

• Long weekends and trips from Madrid (weekends, long weekends and Easter): Segovia and La Granja are among the most common day trips from Madrid. On long weekends and at Easter the old town and the area around the aqueduct fill up, and return pickups in the late afternoon all coincide.

Tip: From Riaza, Sepúlveda or Cantalejo, the A-1 is usually a more direct way to the airport than going down to Segovia; say so when booking if you have a preference.
